Offices, banks, others shut in Plateau
IN compliance with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directives that workers shun their work places to protest the recent fuel price increase, government offices and banks were yesterday closed in Plateau State.
However, commercial motorcyclists and taxi drivers operated while some filling stations opened for business in Jos metropolis.
When The Guardian went round the state capital, all federal and state establishments were under locks and keys, including the state and federal secretariats.
Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, the state's NLC Chairman, Yusuf Zambuk, said the only problem confronting the Labour was how to check the activities of commercial motorcyclists and taxi drivers.
He said as from today, the NLC in the state would embark on an underground ploy to make sure no filling station opens to any commercial vehicle so that they would be starved of fuel, thereby forcing them out of the roads.
Commenting on the situation, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, said he believed in dialogue.
He said it would have been proper for both sides - government and labour to come to a round table discussion and resolve the issue amicably.
However, the state's Sole Administrator, Maj.-Gen. Chris Alli (rtd), said he was busy monitoring the strike from government house to ensure that everything was all right before going out to any function, saying that was responsible for the delay in going out.
