Ademowo urges govt to adopt people-friendly policies
THE Archbishop of Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos and Bishop of Lagos Diocese, Revd. Dr. Ephraim Ademola Ademowo, has urged the Federal Government to alleviate the sufferings on Nigerians brought about by the recent increase in petroleum product prices.
He also called for the immediate release of local councils' allocation of some states being withheld by the Federal Government.
Ademowo in an interview with The Guardian after a special service on Sunday at the Christ Anglican Church, Ebute Metta, Lagos, said: "There is no way people can continue under this situation. If the fuel price is jacked up, it is going to really make life difficult for the masses."
He added: "The Federal Government can still prioritise its spending and see areas in which it can use money for the welfare of the people. I am sure with the Economists and these specialists that are now in government, they should be able to see how they can assist us to move forward."
Ademowo continued: "All I am worried about is this high level of poverty, which is really affecting our people in this country. The Federal Government must be a listening government. They must listen to the people. If they do not listen to the people, if they do not know what is happening at the grassroots, it is going to be very unfortunate."
The Anglican Archbishop prayed for a better Nigeria and observed that despite the setbacks, the country is still making progress.
On council funds in some states being withheld by the Federal Government because of additional councils created by those states, Ademowo said: "We have been praying the Federal Government to assist those states that are affected. Look at Lagos State for example, the Governor has been administering this state under a very serious financial stress. And this money that is not released is making life very difficult for the Governor and members of his team. The Federal Government should at least release the funds meant for the previous local councils. To stop it is something I cannot fathom. It is not fair."
