A lady and the diplomat
SIR: In your publication of Monday October 6, 2004 at page 14, one Abraham Oretimehin wrote in saying his female friend was nearly sexually assaulted at the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya. Below are my comments/advice to him.
Dear Abraham,
Upon my first reading of your story I felt sorry for you but on a deeper reflection I saw the story a bit petty if taken as is, hence this write-up.Visa requirements are quite standard and can be gotten easily even by your good self here in Nigeria. We don't expect all would be enquirers to embassies to all troop into the offices and sit down just to obtain requirements for issuance of visa.
Unless otherwise proven, one is inclined to suspect that your friend may have low morals or does not have a responsible personality, comportment and pedigree. Few men, more so a diplomat (if he was really one and not a service staff) would just rush at a lady in the manner you described without some form of conscious or unconscious invitation. There may be some aspects of the incident left out by your friend.
By way of advice make effort to obtain the name and details of this attache (most of our high commissions have minimal staff these days), date, time and location (department/section) where these events took place. Presence of witnesses if any may help. Upon this, do a detailed petition to the ministry of External Affairs Abuja (attention Mrs. Wadibia Anyanwu, Permanent Secretary) copying the High Commissioner in Kenya (Lenana Road Nairobi Kenya). Send through registered post or reputable courier. Your friend could also make a formal complaint to the Kenya Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Harambee Avenue Nairobi. Be sure of your facts, as this is a serious indictment in diplomatic circles.
Lastly, I would like to ask what the actual level of "friendship" between you two is. One hopes it is not a case of all these Internet-based outings. If so then I doubt if you should stake your pen on this lady. If not then go ahead with the petition. Who knows I may render some assistance. Good luck.
Kwame Ukagwu,
