LAGOS—THE presence of heavily armed policemen deployed to various streets of Lagos yesterday kept off the roads hoodlums who wanted to take advantage of the sit-at-home order by Nigeria Labour Congress NLC to wreak havoc on innocent citizens. However, except for a few areas like Agege, Yaba and parts of Ikeja where street urchins otherwise known as Area Boys harassed and vandalized some private vehicles which plied the almost deserted roads, Lagos was peaceful.
The Lagos State Police Commissioner Mr. Israel Ajao who took personal patrol of the metropolis could commended Lagosians for the maturity exhibited during the first day of the strike action. The police boss also commended Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers DPOs for carrying out the Inspector General of Police IGP’s directives of making sure that no innocent citizens going about their respective lawful business were attacked by miscreants.
Reacting to the relative crime free situation in the state, Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ighodalo said officers and men of the Command acted on the directives of the Inspector General of Police. He explained that immediately the signal by the NLC was received, all the state Commissioners were directed to ensure that the situation was adequately contained by deploying enough men to the streets to ensure that the situation was not used by some unscrupulous elements in the society to cause mayhem.
It was also gathered that three days to the ultimatum given by NLC, the state command held a marathon security meeting with all the Area Commanders and DPOs with a view to fine tunning security strategies ahead of the planned strike. “as you can see there is peace and people who have cause to go out are doing so without fear of molestation. This is the directive of the indefatigable IG to all the state commands across the country and we are determined to ensure its compliance.
"To buttress that further, our own Commissioner of Police Mr. Israel Ajao in company of other senior officers went round the length and breath of the state as early as possible to ensure that peace and orderliness reign,” Ighodalo said.
