Strike: Doctors abandon patients

By Austin Ogwuda
Tuesday, October 12, 2004

ASABA — TWENTY patients suffering from different types of ailments were found abandoned at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba as the nationwide strike began yesterday. A visit to the hospital at about 10:00 am yesterday showed that the gates were under lock and key. However, this reporter managed to manoeuver his way in through the footpath only to find the patients groaning in pain unattended to. Only a few of the patients who were lucky enough to have some staff nurses of the hospital as relations were receiving attention.

Vanguard's investigation revealed that the hospital management had earlier before the commencement of the strike discharged a good number of the patients while the relations of others admitted had also moved them away to private hospitals for proper attention. Contacted on phone, the hospital's spokesman, Mr. Nnamdi Ogbogu said “the NLC men came at 7pm on Sunday to lock the gates and warned us not to open. That is the situation. Some consultants are however attending to some of the admitted patients who, may be, could not afford to relocate to private hospitals.

"Some of the nurses you see are there to help out their relations and are also generous to help some others on humanitarian ground”, he stated.
A few commercial buses were seen plying the road while the popular Ogbeogongo market did not open until about 11am yesterday. Okada and taxi operatos were however seen plying the road. Petrol stations were also shut.
