WARRI — A MOBILE policeman who goes by the sobriquet, “Holy Ghost Fire” has run amok at Obiaruku in Ukwuani local government area of Delta, shooting a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), identified as Chukwutem Ogbu to death. Delta State police spokesman, Mr. Victor Obasuyi confirmed to Vanguard yesterday that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Charles Akaya has ordered the arrest of the killer policeman and his immediate prosecution.
Coincidentally, the deceased's elder brother is an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Mobile Police. The policeman said to have gulped several bottles of alcohol before the killing of the NYSC member, started his horrific activities on the day in question with the ransacking of a residence on Eboh street, Obiaruku, where he beat up one Joseph Abraham in his attempt to loot a store. The rampaging cop who hired a motorcyclist for his escapades allegedly extorted N800 from one Christopher Obafe who he intimidated with his gun for urinating in front of his compound in the night.
Obafe was allegedly horsewhipped and tortured before he parted with N800 out of the N10,000 ransom demanded by “Holy Ghost Fire.” When the pummeling of Obafe became too much, his wife bolted from the house for her dear life but the killer policeman forced Obafe to join him and the motorcyclist he hired on his looting spree in his (Obafe’s motor cycle).
It was in this entourage that they ran into some five youths including the deceased youth corps member. The Policeman ordered all of them to stop and lie down. The late Ogbu who saw no reason for his labeling them robbers and flogging them in the process, stood up to introduce himself and showed his identity card. For having the temerity to stand up when he told them to lie down, “Holy Ghost Fire” first released a teargas canister on the youth corps member and followed it with a gunshot. As Ogbu collapsed, every other person took to his heels. He, was, however, rushed to the Obiaruku General Hospital at about 1.45 am in an unconscious state but reports from the area said he died 15 minutes later.
