Aviation fuel hike delays troop movement to Dafur

By Chris Agbambu

Deputy Bureau Chief, Abuja

The recent increase in aviation fuel and the strike action embarked upon on Monday by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has delayed the movement of troops to Dafur region in the war torn Sudan.

The African Union, which President Olusegun Obasanjo is the chairman, has requested for another battalion from Nigeria to beef up security in Dafur.

Nigeria had two months ago sent one battalion to the region as protection force in Dafur.

The troops, which have been assembled, were to leave for Dafur during the week, but the increase in the Aviation fuel from N36 per litre to N65 per litre has altered all arrangement for the movement.

Informed military sources, disclosed to Daily Independent that the Directorate of Peace Keeping Operations, Defence Headquarters, had submitted to the Due Process Office in the Presidency the fuel implications of moving  the troops to Dafur at N36 per litre for approval only for events to change last week as aviation fuel jumped from N36 to N65 per litre.  The troops were to be transported by the Nigerian Air force Hercules C130.

On who bears the burden of paying the troops, the military source disclosed that the AU is solely responsible for the troops.
