Strike disrupts Reps tour of Akwa Ibom

By Uduak Iniodu

Reporter, Uyo

Members of the House of Representatives hurriedly cut short their three day visit to Akwa Ibom and returned to Abuja as the stay at home order by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) began on Monday.

The lawmakers led by the Speaker, Aminu Masari arrived Uyo at the weekend and held an interactive session with a cross section of the people of the state where issues bordering on the welfare of the state and the entire Niger Delta region were deliberated upon.

They were expected to hold a joint sitting with the State House of Assembly when the strike commenced, forcing them to abandon the idea and head straight to the airport enroute Abuja.

When Daily Independent monitored the strike in the state capital and adjoining local government areas, the gates of government offices and banks were closed, while officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) were on hand to ensure compliance of the NLC order.

Also, school children got to their various schools, only to find the gates under lock and key. Armed policemen were drafted to the State and Federal Secretariats to maintain law and order as well as protect government properties from being vandalized.

Markets, shops and filling stations were however opened to provide normal services to the people, even though only few filling stations sold fuel, thereby resulting in long queues.

NLC Chairman, Mr Udo Kirian Akpan in a telephone interview told Daily Independent that the workers and the civil society in the state fully complied with the stay at home directive by the National Executive Council of NLC.
