Nov

The Non-Academic Staff Union
of Universities (NASU) has criticised the Federal Government for not
paying the backlog of arrears of salaries and allowances owed the workers,
threatening to embark on strike next month if the money was not paid
before the end of this month.
In a statement at the end of
an emergency meeting of the Research and Projects Trade Group Council, the
union said, Government has demonstrated its insensitivity to the growth
of research and technological advancement which is a pre-requisite to
national development. This neglect is not in the interest of Nigeria in
view of the abundant resources available to the government. The excess
income from crude oil sale to the tune of N600 million could be handy for
this purpose, the union said.
The statement signed by the
Chairman, Mr. Gbemi Otuboye and Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Alhassan
Mohammed of the council, the union said NASU in research institutes would
resort to industrial action to compel government to fulfill its
obligations.
 The government should pay
the workers fully by the end of October, failing which by the first week
of November 2004 the union will start a seven-day warning strike with
effect from November 1 after which full scale industrial action shall
follow, it said.
It criticised the
implementation of the Pension Reform Act, saying it is wrong to deduct
workers money when all the necessary machineries for the investment of the
fund have not been put in place like the registration of Pension Fund
Custodian and Pension Fund Administrators.
While praising the National
President of NASU, Mr. Ivor Tarko, and the General Secretary, Prince
Peters Adeyemi, for their commitment to the unions aspirations, it called
on government to correct the loopholes in the Act.
