Compliance is victory for
labour
By Victor

Reporter, Lagos
The peoples decision to
comply with the sit-at-home order given by labour and its civil society
allies to protest the hike in fuel price is a manifestation of the fact
that the people have more confidence in labour than the Federal
Government.
Briefing the press after a
tour of the Lagos metropolis with reporters to assess the impact of the
strike, the NLC Director of Communication, Mr. Owei Lamkemfa said the
success of the strike in Lagos State and other parts of the country was a
sign that the people are equally tired of governments anti-people
policies and are calling for a change.
 The strike is very
successful in Lagos. As you can see, banks and other finance houses as
well as offices are closed, roads are deserted in protest of government
anti-people policies, he said.
Lamkemfa praised the masses
for remaining steadfast and in obeying the call to remain indoors,
assuring that victory would
be achieved at the end of the struggle if they could sustain the tempo of
the strike.
He maintained that the strike
action would continue Tuesday but added that the outcome of the
stakeholders meeting that took place in Abuja Monday could also determine
the next line of action.
The federal government on
Monday called a stakeholder meeting in Abuja to discuss the problems of
the downstream sector. The meeting was presided over by President
Obansanjo and invitations were extended the labour community.
The tour that covered Lagos
Island, Oshodi, Ipaja, Ikeja among other major parts of the state, showed
that commercial activities were grounded throughout the state as a result
of the strike. While commercial vehicles were off the road for the better
part of the day, motorists were on the road without molestation that used
to characterize similar actions in the past.
Police vehicles were stationed
at perceived flashpoints in anticipation of public disorder but this never
occurred.
