Fuel price hike: Royal fathers may intervene, says Ooni

By Gbenga Faturoti

Special Correspondent, Osogbo

Prominent traditional rulers across the six geo-political zones of the country may have begun subterranean moves to douse the tension occasioned by the hike in the prices of petroleum products in the country.

The moves, Daily Independent newspapers learnt, was on the heels of the passionate letter sent to them by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade who divulged the content of the NLCs letter to the monarchs, said royal fathers have resolved to douse the tension over the fuel hike in the country by appealing to the two parties, the labour and the government to tread the path of peace in the interest of the nations democratic order and unity.

Oba Sijuwade, who stated that since last week Thursday when the NLCs letter reached his palace, he has begun moves on how to get other prominent traditional rulers ready for the task ahead.

He noted that it is the responsibility of we monarchs to talk to both parties and ensure that there is peace in the land.

The monarch however, assured Nigerians of the royal fathers support on the problem appealing that the face-off would be resolved.

He urged Nigerian workers to exercise some patience and allow the royal fathers time to intervene in the matter.

In a related development, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Chief Lai Ogunrinade has enjoined the Federal Government to let Nigerians know the rationale behind its decision to hike fuel prices.

Speaking in his country home, in Egbedore local government area of the state, he chided the labour leaders for plunging the nation into another strike, saying they were aware of the rationale behind the fuel price increment.

Ogunrinade appealed to labour not to politicise the issue, stressing that if the money the government was using to subsidise a barrel of petroleum products per day was converted to another use, the nation would have been developed beyond the stage it is now.
