Tuesday, October 12th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Security tightened in Kano as strike closes shops, banks By Augustine Madu-West Special Correspondent, Kano   In Kano, the strike went on on Monday amid tight security. The presence of anti-riot armed conventional policemen in the city more than doubled as banks, other financial institutions, state and Federal Government establishments remained closed. Government establishments like the Kano depot of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Television Authority, Federal Secretariat and other sensitive installations were heavily guarded. Police also rolled out armoured tanks which were stationed few metres away to the State Government House. The city recorded scanty vehicular and human traffic as workers responded to the stay-at-home strike. Our correspondent reports that petty trading however flourished in the city.
