Tuesday, October 12th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page NEPA consumers to pay higher tariffs By Bassey Udo Senior Correspondent, Abuja   Nigerians who are yet to come to terms with the grim reality of last week�s unexpected increase in the prices of petroleum products have been told that they would soon have to contend with paying higher electricity bills. Power and Steel Minister, Senator Liyel Imoke, hinted this at the weekend, at the ground breaking ceremony of two of the four gas turbine power stations to be sited at Geregu-Ajaokuta in Kogi State, Omotosho in Ondo State; Olorunsogo, Papalanto in Ogun State and Alaoji in Abia State. The gas turbines are part of the overall plan by the Federal Government to boost the nation�s electricity generation capacity to about 10,000megawatts (MW) between 2007 and 2010. When completed, they would generate and inject about 2000MW of electricity into the national grid. At the Omotosho groundbreaking ceremony, Imoke said the first phase of the 670MW capacity project to be handled by Chinese National Machinery and Equipment Import/Export Company, would be completed in 13 months at a cost of about N25 billion, while the second phase would take the same period and resources to execute. The minister said the unique feature of the projects were the loan facility syndicated by the Chinese Export/Import Bank that would be sponsored at the ratio of 35:65 between the Federal government and the bank.   Copyright� 2004.
