Nationwide strike: Police kill Kaduna protester
From Aliyu Haruna, in Kaduna

The first day of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), nationwide strike over fuel price increases recorded tragedy yesterday as a 12 year old boy, Muhammadu Sani Idris, was allegedly shot dead by a police officer (names with-held), while attempting to disperse demonstrating youths in Tudun Wada area of Kaduna.
According to an eye witness, Malam Kabir Awwal, a resident of Tudun Wada, the incident occurred when youths in the area, in compliance with the NLC stay-at-home order, carried leaves, signifying protest and the police who arrived the scene fired tear gas canisters and live bullets which caught the victim on the head and he died instantly.
Daily Trust gathered that a police officer popularly known as “Misi-masi” and another identified as “L. S.” were being suspected by eyewitness as responsible for the death of the deceased.
When the police left the area according to another eyewitness, Isah Muhammad, the corpse was taken to the residence of one Ma-lam Abubakar Turaita, for immediate burial at the Tudun Wada cemetery.
A tea seller at the spot of the incident told Daily Trust that the police arrested six of his customers while they were drinking tea in his shop.
A cross-section of residents who spoke with our cor-respondent confirmed that the incident occurred when the youths engaged in burning tyres on the road to demonstrate their support for NLC.
“The police arrived the scene of the incident and the youths chanted “Karyane-Karyane” meaning “It is a lie, it is a lie,” when the police fired shots and in the pro-cess, the boy was killed instantly,” an eye witness said.
But in a swift reaction, the Kaduna State commissioner of police, Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Yesufu, denied know-ledge of the killing but con-firmed the arrest of over 40 people in Tudun Wada.
According to Alhaji Yesufu, the accused will soon be arraigned before a court of law after investigation.
The commissioner said that the police has not stopped people from demonstrating against government policies, but that it must be done in line with constitutional provisions.
He said protesters have no right to stop people from moving freely by barricading the road.
