NLC shuts down Makurdi NNPC depot From Hir Joseph, in Makurdi Protesting members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday shut down the Makurdi depot of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the offices of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), in Benue State. Though armed policemen made frantic efforts to pre-vent protesters from gaining access to the NNPC depot, members of NUPENG who complied with the NLC order suspended activities at the depot. However, the protest was peaceful without gun shots by the police. In a pamphlet distributed to relevant authorities, the state commissioner of police, Mr Johnson Uzuegbunam, warned labour leaders against taking laws into their hands. The statement which also warned hoodlums against taking advantage of the situation to commit arson, advised law abiding citizens to go about their lawful busi-nesses without fear of mole-station from any quarters. The command deployed truck loads of armed polic-emen into the streets in all major towns particularly Makurdi metropolis.     TO NEXT NEWS PAGE...
