Lagos warns new councils against crisis
By Idowu Ajanaku
LAGOS State Governor Bola Tinubu yesterday vowed to abolish any of the newly created local councils whose citizens cannot work together.
He spoke amidst protest from the people of Ishihun , Ikorodu North Local Government who stormed the governor's office over allegations of marginalisation by the state government.
In a letter signed by 18 prominent community leaders from the area, the protesters alleged that the Lagos State House of Assembly had approved Ishihun as the new headquarters of the newly created Ikorodu North Local Government Council, but are shocked when Idogiyan was announced as the headquarters.
Besides, the community said that no indigene of Ishihun was among the five councillors appointed to administer the local government council by the state government.
Thus, they called on Governor Tinubu to use his good office to move the headquarters of the local government from Idogiyan to Ishihun in the interest of peace and stability.
Also, they want their own people to be appointed as councillors in order to be part of the government in the newly created council.
In his response, Governor Tinubu charged the citizens of the newly created council to work together.
He noted that the councils were created in order to bring governance nearer to the people.
Tinubu, however, said his government will not hesitate to abolish any of the council whose citizens cannot work together.
His words: "The government will not hesitate to abolish any of council where there are rancours and where the citizens cannot work together."
Moreover, Governor Tinubu asked the people to direct their protest to the State House of Assembly for consideration.
In his thinking, Tinubu said he could not by his own authority move any headquarter of local government from one place to another, insisting that such power is vested in the House of Assembly.
Indeed, the Lagos State Government had announced 37 additional local government following a bill passed by the State House of Assembly for the creation of more local governments in the state, which now brings the total number of local government in the state to 57.
