I would appreciate if you would allow me space in your newspaper to bring to the public the antics of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) in Lugbe, Airport Road, Abuja.
Day in day out NEPA officials make every effort to present the authority in good light. They tell us that citizens are not to be tasked for the provision of electricity. They always want us to believe that the citizens are only expected to pay their monthly bills.
But contrary to the foregoing, NEPA tasks citizens to do everything, ranging from buying of transformers to sundry repairs.
The case of Lugbe is pathetic. The last time residents of zones five and six in Lugbe had light was before Easter precisely in April this year. According to NEPA, our transformer burnt beyond repairs. At a point, after about two months of neglect, NEPA came and carried the transformer, assuring us that they would bring it back in two weeks time. However, it stayed for some months before they brought another old transformer, but of high capacity. The transformer was dumped for some weeks without working or being connected before NEPA came to take it back claiming that it needed some repairs. After about a week, they brought it back.
Since returning the transformer, it has not been connected for over six months now, and we have not had light since than. At a point, some men who introduced themselves as NEPA officials came around and were collecting money from some residents to be used to settle some Ogas before our light would be restored.
The point to note is that even if that particular transformer starts working, it will be inadequate to serve the teeming Lugbe population. In fact, the area needs more transformers.
Therefore, we call on NEPA officials to please take interest and investigate the activities of its officials as to determine the veracity or otherwise of this accusation. This is the only way to prove to the masses that transparency remains the cornerstone of the present administration.
