LAGOS (AFP) -
Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), an affiliate of American ChevronTeaxco, formally reported an oil leak estimated at about two barrels from its export pipeline leading from its Escravos Terminal to the Berthing Operations Platform (BOP) about 15 miles offshore.

The leak happened last September 30, according to the company's statement, a copy of which was sent to AFP by e-mail.
The 26-inch export pipeline, which is currently undergoing repair work, had been isolated from current operations and the leak was from the remnant of oil trapped inside the line, said the statement signed by company spokesman Sola Omole.
The leak could not be contained within recovery booms due to strong tidal action. So authorized dispersant was applied by attendant marine vessels.
The residual oil was allowed to disperse naturally, it said.
After conducting overview flights, CNL assessed that no further clean-up activity is required at this time, it added.
The spill has been reported to regulatory agencies and a joint inspection visit, involving federal and state environmental agencies and community representatives is planned for Friday this week, said the statement.
Residents in oil-rich Niger-Delta have often complained about environmental pollution, degradation and destruction of their ecosystem by foreign oil companies operating in the area.
