University of Benin looks for funds to sort out its pressing problems
Emmanuel Nwanze, vice-chancellor, University of Benin, UNIBEN, is worried about the poor funding of the institution. Recently, he approached the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for strategic financial support. He said the appeal would aid the institution in the maintenance and development of infrastructure.
The critical problem confronting the school include inadequate hostel accommodation and erosion which has been threatening both the staff quarters and some of the administrative blocks. The vice-chancellor who expressed concern at the dilapidating staff quarters and hostel accommodation in the institution said the university stood the risk of losing several buildings to erosion.
Based on this, he appealed to the management of NDDC to assist not only in salvaging the land beside the blocks of flat which is being ravaged by erosion but to also provide the university with hostel accommodation and hitech security gadgets to ensure effective protection of lives and property.
According to him, since education and youth empowerment fall within the mandate of the commission, the university of Benin should form a major interest point for the activities of NDDC. Any intervention by the commission will be a direct support to the education of the youth and people of Niger Delta. This will enhance the efforts of NDDC in fulfilling its mandate, he said.
Onyema Ugochukwu, chairman of the Board, NDDC, while responding said his commission would digest the proposal sent n by the university to see how NDDC could participate in solving the problems highlighted by the vice-chancellor. The chairman promised to draw the attention of the minister for intergovernmental affairs, the body that administers the ecological fund to erosion problems, said it was part of NDDC's mandate to build model hostel and computer centres in each of the campuses in the Niger Delta. He noted that such intervention would boost the employment opportunity of students after graduation.
