Ex-lawmaker tasks PDP on Anambra crisis

A former member of the Anambra House of Assembly, Mr Onyeka Aghanya, has appealed to the PDP to find a solution to the political crisis that has engulfed the state since 1999.

Aghanya, who represented Awka South constituency 11 from 1999 to 2003, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the crisis, which began during the Mbadinuju administration, had factionalised the state.

He said that the face-off between Gov. Chris Ngige and Chief Chris Ubah had worsened the political situation because no group wanted the other to dominate.

I want the national secretariat of the PDP to define the role of a governor and the state party chairman in the leadership of the party in a state he said.

The former law maker said that the political problems led to the substitution of genuine candidates screened for the 2003 state and National Assembly elections with people who did not contest the party primaries.

I was affected by this unwholesome act with many other candidates who paid huge sums of money only to be dumped.

In the interest of peace and progress of our party, we had decided not to make fuss or cause confusion, he said.

Aghanya, however, said that the party might witness more trouble in the December local government polls in the state if the face-off between Ngige and Ubah was not resolved.

He said that the charged and tensed atmosphere could snowball into a more serious crisis because each contending group would not want to let go its grip on the political structure in the state.

Again, it is Anambra state that is suffering because no development takes place in a crisis environment. That is why I want the PDP national headquarters to resolve our political problem, he added.
