Twenty-nine year
Hajara Ibrahim on Tuesday became the fourth person sentenced to death by
stoning in Bauchi State, a sentence passed on her by a Sharia Court for having
sex outside wedlock.
The court in Lere,
Tafawa Balawa Council, insisted that her offence runs counter to the state
Sharia Penal Code as she got pregnant without a husband, an offence which
attracts the death penalty.
Grand Khadi Abubakar
Ello said Hajara confessed to having sex with one Dauda Sani (35) who promised
to marry her. However, the man denied knowing the lady.
Although she confessed
to having an affair with Sani, which resulted in her pregnancy, the court found
him not guilty for lack of evidence.
“There is no
evidence to link him with the allegation and consequently, the court acquitted
him for lack of evidence", Ello said.
The court, however,
handed over Hajara to her guardian to take care of her till she gives birth
before the judgment would be carried out.
The death sentence
passed on her brings to four the number of people who have been condemned to
death by the various Sharia courts in the state.
Others who have
received death sentence by stoning include Yunusa Rifin Chiyawa (35), who
admitted to having slept with a friend's wife.
Besides, 23 persons
are awaiting amputation for various offences committed. They include Husseine
Maidoya who chopped off his wife’s left leg over allegation of
infidelity.
The Sharia
Consultation Forum recently in Bauchi called on Governor Adamu Muazu to either
assent to the sentences or set the convicts free, as their “continued
detention is contrary to Islamic injunction”.
Muazu has, however,
said that it is not his responsibility to do so as the authority has been
delegated to the Sharia Commission.
