Businesses Remain Dull in Bayelsa
From John Iwori in Yenagoa

As the sit-at-home strike action embarked upon by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society groups enters the second day, business activities in the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa remained dull, just as the state secretariat complex where more than half of the state ministries have their offices remained under lock and key.

When THISDAY called at the secretariat complex at 10:15a.m, the premises was empty as civil servants stayed away from their duty posts in line with the directive of the NLC.

Apart from a few commissioners and permanent secretaries who breezed in and left a few minutes later, the entire complex was like a grave yard with doors and windows of offices firmly locked.

The situation was not different at the state seat of power, Creek Haven Yenagoa as most aides of Governor Diepreye Alamieye-seigha and his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan were not on their seats.

However, there were free movements of persons as commercial motorcyclists, popularly called okada plied the roads unhindered.

Labour leaders in the state, especially the NLC chairman, Comrade Ben Bio Basuo has reportedly gone underground to avoid police arrest.

State police commissioner, Mr. Oliver Osuchukwu had earlier threatened to put the labour leaders behind bars if they dare lock up the state secretariat complex and prevent civil servants from reporting for work.

It would be recalled that the non involvement of the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the strike has facilitated the free movement of goods and commuters in Yenagoa metropolis, just as some commercial banks in the state capital attended to some influential customers through the back doors.
