Tough Time in Edo From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City Residents of Benin-City, Edo State, are practically going through tough times, following the shutting down of the two major hospitals in the state, even as the effects of the four-day warning strike over fuel price hike across the country intensified across the state on day-two. The state-owned Central Hospital, King's Square, has been under lock-and-key since Monday, when the strike began, along with banks, state and federal offices, the courts, State House of Assembly, as well as major transport companies operating in the state. The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), on the other hand, has been closed and non-functional for three weeks due to the industrial action embarked upon by the UBTH chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors who are aggrieved over backlog of short-paid salaries and other conditions of service. Patients on admission had either been prematurely discharged or forced to seek alternative medical attention in less equipped and staffed, but generally more expensive private medical and health centres. THISDAY investigations revealed that private hospitals and clinics and even maternity homes have been cashing in on the non-availability of medical serves in the major hospitals to make quick business, charging exorbitant fees, while some patients and their relations have resorted to patronizing traditional medicine homes. One area the effect of the closure of hospitals has probably been most felt is the mortuary services, where relations of deceased are being forced in the circumstance to arrange for the speedy internment of the deceased.
