Banks, Schools Remain Shut in Akwa Ibom From Efem Nkanga in Uyo The strike action called upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC and Civil societies entered its second day in Akwa Ibom state with people going about their normal businesses. THISDAY checks reveal that apart from Banks, financial institutions,and some Government establishments and schools that were under lock and key, shops,markets and motor parks in the state were fully functional with people going about their normal business in spite of the strike action. Most fuel stations in the state were also open for business,with fuel being sold for 60 naira per litre in the stations. Oil companies in the state were also open for business and people were observed going about their businesses without molestation. Although NITEL was off and the people of the state were cut off from NITEL services, as NITEL was said to have joined the strike action. A cross section of people in the state who spoke with THISDAY in support of the strike expressed dismay at the increase in the price of fuel and denounced the Federal Government for increasing the price of fuel in this hard times when the Govt was making so much money from the high price of crude oil at the international market. Others who spoke also expressed their reservation with the strike action,stressing that it will only add to the suffering of the common man who is looking for his daily bread.They however appealed to the govt to revert to the old pump price of fuel and urged the NLC to dialogue with the Federal Govt to find a permanent solution to the constant increase in fuel prices.
