Cleric Wants Amicable Resolution
From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi
The Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Bauchi Dio-cese, Rt. Rev. Laudamus Ereaku has added his voice to the call for dialogue between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for an amicable resolution to the on-going Nationwide strike embarked upon by the organized labour over the recent increment in the prices of petroleum products in the country.
Ereaku while reacting to the strike spearheaded by the NLC and civil society groups across the nation in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Bauchi yesterday, said the current strike action was not in the interest of the Nigerian masses as it would further deteriorate their economic problems and well being.
The Bishop who apart from faulting the timing of the strike also blamed the Federal Government for announcing the removal of the subsidy on petroleum products without due consultation and adequate information to the citizens.
Ereaku pointed out that the Government erred by not introducing palliative measure to cushion the harsh effect of the present economic hardship in the country before going ahead with another round of oil price hike but however said that the country could not do without the deregulation of the down stream sector of the petroleum industry so as to shore up the socio-economic indices of the nation.
He called for restraint on the part of the country's Labour Union and the civil societies on the on-going nationwide strike stressing that continued dialogue and consultation with the Federal Government and other stakeholders remained the viable option towards resolving labour's grievances in the country.
The cleric who then called on Government "to do something positively and urgently to assuage the harsh effect of poverty and want ravaging the people in the country" added that the President should as a matter of necessity and urgency provide his promised palliative measures to cushion the effect of the hike on the citizenry.
While enjoining Nigerians not to engage in actions that could endanger the nation's democracy, he declared that the stability of the polity and unity of the nation should not be compromised at this point of Nigeria's growing credentials in the eyes of the international community.
