Sharia: Woman to Die for Adultery From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi A Bauchi Area Sharia Court has sentenced one Hajara Ibrahim, to death by stoning after she was found guilty of Hajara, 29, resident of Lere, Tafawa Balewa Local Government area of the state. Ibrahim was convicted for adultery after getting pregnant outside wedlock. The court Presiding Judge (Alkali), Alhaji Abubakar Bello, while passing the death sentence explained that the convict was found guilty of geting pregnant outside marriage in contravention of section 133 of the state Sharia penal code (2001). According to him, the convict confessed to have had sex with one Malam Dauda Sani, a 35-year old whom she claimed had promised to marry her. But Sani, the Judge added denied ever meeting her and was subsequently discharged and acquitted for want of evidence. The convict was, however, handed over to her guardian pending her safe delivery and weaning of the child before the death sentence is executed. All efforts to speak to the convict proved abortive, as she said that she had been warned from talking to the press or "any outsider" on the incident. Hajara has brought to five the number of persons convicted and sentenced to death by stoning since the introduction and adoption of the Islamic legal code in the state over two years ago.
