Transporter Shot Dead in Rivers From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Atransport worker known as loader was yesterday shot dead and 20 others injured in Port Harcourt Rivers State when Police responded to an alarm raised by a driver of a commercial vehicle. The deceased whose full identity could not be ascertained but simply called Ebere was shot dead at the Elenlenwo junction in Port Harcourt. An eyewitness told Thisday that the deceased met his untimely death when the commercial driver of a bus he (Ebere) assisted to load refused to pay him the normal loading allowance of N20. argument reportedly ensued and when the commercial driver saw Police patrol van passing by, he raised alarm and shouted, "thief, thief. The deceased, on seeing the Police van negotiating to reverse was said to have taken to his heels but luck ran out of him when one of the policemen opened fire and shot him in the back. Youths within the vicinity who saw that Ebere has died on the spot went on rampage destroying vehicles and causing body injuries on passers-by. As a result of the commotion, a policeman and 20 other persons were reportedly injured. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sylvester Araba who confirmed the report described Ebere as a victim of accidental discharge . "There was a scuffle among thugs at the Eleme junction and when the police intervened, one of the thugs tried to disarm a policeman and in the ensuing struggle, there was an accidental discharge which led to the death of one of the thugs" the commissioner maintained.
