50 MASSOB Members Arrested
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki

Men believed to be members of State Security Service (SSS) have swooped on suspected members of Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), at Ikom in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State and arrested about 50 members of the group.

This was disclosed by MASSOB memebrs from Ebonyi State who said they escaped from Ikom, to avoid being arrested by security forces. According to eye witness account, 20 out of the 50 persons arrested were still missing at the time of filing this report, while the rest were taken to Zone 6 of Nigeria Police Command, Calabar, where they were said to have been refused bail. THISDAY gathered that those arrested mostly traders at the main market of Ikom, were identified by unknown persons suspected to be Igbos who frown at the activities of MASSOB in the area. The arrested members were not only denied bail, but were also not given access to their relatives who have been protesting against their arrest. "The arrest of our members started on September 27, and it was by men of the SSS. We suspect that somebody is betraying us, because the SSS men have the addresses and names of those they were arresting. We suspect that it is some Igbos who are helping them to arrest us. They said they don't support us because we are spoiling their businesses for them," one of them who declined to identify himself said. The members who spoke to THISDAY also disclosed that while many indigenes of Cross River doubt the possibility of realising Biafra and frown at agitation for its realisation, others say that it will be good if it is realized. Also many indigenes express the wish that MASSOB should not operate in their communities, protesting against their clamour for the division of Nigeria.
