ABUJA — TWO of the two-star general nominated as members of the Court Martial to try three Rear-Admirals over their roles in the missing bunkering ship, MT African Pride have pulled out.
They are Air Vice-Marshal S. E. Hedima, Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Defence Academy and Maj.-Gen. M. A. Garba, Commandant of the Armoured Centre and School, Nigeria Army, Bauchi.
They have been replaced by Air Vice-Marshal Sam Odesola, Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna and Rear-Admiral Anthony Oni, Chief of Policy and Plans at the Naval Headquarters, Abuja.
According to military sources, AVM Hedima and Maj.-Gen. Garba declined to serve because they were course mates of Rear-Admiral Francis Agbiti and Rear-Admiral Antonio Bob Manuel. They were all in Course Nine of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Vanguard gathered that apart from the voluntary withdrawal of the officers, any of the Rear-Admirals appearing before the Court Martial, is free to call for the removal of any officer who he feels would be biased against him during the trial process.
Other members of the Court Martial who were not affected by the changes are Rear-Admiral Joseph Ajayi, Chief of Defence Intelligence, who is President, Rear-Admiral Amos Adedeji, Commandant of the National War College, Maj.-Gen. Patrick Akpa, Chief of Policy and Plans at Army Headquarters, and two Commodores who were members of the Board of Inquiry (BOI), set up last month that found the admirals culpable of negligent conduct.
Prosecutors for the Navy, an Air Commodore and Army Colonel who are lawyers have already been chosen while the three Rear-Admirals, Agbiti, Bob-Manuel and Kolawole, are free to either make use of military lawyers or civilian lawyers of their choice.
