I 'll Leave Delta With My Head High - Ibori
  • Obaigbena: for Ibori, Nigerians spoke
    From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba

Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, yesterday said he has done enough for his people to leave office with head held high. He made this declaration in his country home, Oghara, where he is observing the traditional rites after burying his mother, Comfort.

Ibori, while receiving the Chairman of THISDAY Group, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, and Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, said: "I don't want to leave office one day and would have to be going around in a bullet proof car. If not for the exigencies of office, I really do not need any security to move around in Delta State."

Ibori said that his commitment was to the people of Delta State "and I pray everyday that even when I make mistakes they will not be so fundamental as to distort my vision. I know I make difficult decisions everyday but I try to stay on the side of the people."

On a personal note, Ibori thanked Obaigbena whom he described as a brother and friend, for the visit, adding that "now that my mum has passed on, I am happy I still have a mum in Agbor (Obaigbena's) to go for counsel."

Speaking earlier, Obaigbena recalled his first meeting in 1999 with the late Ibori's mother. "I recall that when I advised Ibori to build this house shortly before his inauguration, mama was the person who identified this land for us and she supervised the building. This house therefore stands as a testimony to mama and it is good it was built before Ibori ascended office as governor."

Obaigbena said that Ibori's mother chose the time of her departure since God has a way of showing the way, adding that the attendance at the burial (by 22 state governors and other political bigwigs) was a reflection of the people's verdict concerning Ibori's political travails. "The people of Nigeria spoke last Saturday of where the truth lies and I believe that after 2007, God will carve a new role for you."

In his own comment, Ambassador Uwechue said the occasion of the burial of Ibori's mother has "put paid to those who want to destabilise Delta. Governance is not simple and there is no way you can satisfy everybody. The governor is doing his very best for Delta."
