Senators fight over N1.2m c’ttee funds By Isa Sanusi The National Assembly was yesterday thrown into pandemonium when a Senator physically attacked his female colleague, Senator Iyabode Anisulowo, over alleged misappropriation of N1.2 million committee funds. At about 12.00 noon, Senator Isa Mohammed, who is vice chairman, Senate committee on states and local government, slapped the chairman of the committee, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, following a heated argument between them at the front entrance to the National Assembly. Senator Isa Moha-mmed allegedly accused his colleague of spending the committee’s funds without recourse to other members. A Senator and other spectators had to shield Senator Iyabo Anisulowo from furt-her assault while Senator Isa Mohammed, still fuming with rage, accused Senator Anisulowo of arbitrarily withdr-awing N700,000 and N500,000 respectively from the committee’s account within three days. Responding to questions from newsmen after the attack, Senator Anisulowo said: ‘Can a person assault me and go away with it. No way. I am going to take legal action. My eyes are aching me right now.” Senator Iyabo Anisulowo was also reported to have tabled the matter before the deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu and has also written a statement for with the police. Several attempts to get Senator Isa Mohammed to respond to press enquiries failed as he was said to be holding consultations with his lawyers on the matter. Speaking on the matter, the Senate’s spokesman, Senator Tawar Wada, said if the issue in contention between the two senators has to do with the Senate’s functions, then the Senate committee on ethics and privileges has to take up the matter.     TO NEXT NEWS PAGE...
