NUT moves to reconcile breakaway faction

By Fabian Ozor

Senior Correspondent, Lagos

The internal crisis in the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) will soon be over as efforts are being made to settle it amicably, NUT President Mallam Abdulwaheed Omar has said.

He confirmed in an interview in Abuja that meetings aimed at settling the rift are ongoing and expressed optimism that the break away South West faction would return to the ranks.

“The NUT is a family and should not be allowed to break into factions. This is an in-house thing that we do not want to make public. We are making efforts at resolving the misunderstanding so that we can work together as one,” he said.

Some months ago, the South West zone broke away from the national body to form another union because it felt marginalised.

It is protesting the NUT’s refusal to confirm the appointment of a secretary general from the zone who had been on acting capacity but gave the post to someone from the South East.

Omar praised the improvement in the quality of graduates produced by the National Teachers Institute (NTI), saying a survey by the NUT showed that NTI has improved its services.

He said when the institute took off the union had protested over the quality of Grade II teachers being produced by the institution.

“At the beginning we were worried about the quality of teachers they produce and we made representation. We discussed it and a lot of changes were brought in. We pressed until we discovered that it has a political undertone. We said even if they are going to agree with that then there are certain steps”.
