The National Chairman of the All Nigeria
Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief Don Etiebet, has urged the caretaker committee in
Imo State to participate in the bye-election into the House of Representatives
for Okigwe North constituency.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed October 23 for the
bye-election to fill the position vacated by Maurice Ibekwe who died in
detention while being tried for alleged involvement in advanced fee fraud by
the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has
chosen Chief Mike Ohia as its candidate, while the All Progressives Grand
Alliance (APGA) chose Mr. Offoaro Godson.
In a letter of September 23, Etiebet said
there has been no change in the setting up of caretaker committees in some
states and that progress reports should be forwarded to the national
headquarters periodically.
The letter added that: “The national
caucus decision of September 8 nullifying the suspension of the Governor of
Sokoto State, Alhaji Athahiru Bafarawa and the National Secretary, Alhaji Sani
D. El-Katuzu did not affect the status of the six suspended state
executives.”
He urged the chairman to approach the
bankers of the party to effect the changes in signatories to the party’s
account and that “you are also to prepare and participate in the bye
election into the House of Representatives as scheduled by INEC.”
Speaking in Owerri, the Caretaker
Committee Chairman, Chief Vitalis Ajumbe, said the party has begun the
screening of interested contestants for the position.
He described as untrue the cancellation of
the caretaker committee by a letter written to the former Chairman, Dr. Edmund
Onyebuchi, and signed by the party’s legal adviser, saying if that was
true, he ought to be copied and there ought not be any ambiguity in the
party’s address.
Ajumbe said that the party would soon make
the name of the party’s flag bearer for the bye election known and that
he was more interested in ensuring that the party gave its ticket to those that
are deserving and true members.
