Two members opt out of Naval court martial

By Chris Agbambu

Deputy Bureau Chief, Abuja

Two members have opted out of the court martial set up by the Naval authorities to try three Rear Admirals and other officers indicted by the Board of Inquiry (BOI) over the missing illegal bunkering ship, “African Pride”.

They are Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Air Vice Marshal S. E. Hedima and Commandant, Armoured Corps and School Major General M. A. Garba.

Military sources disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja that both opted out because they were same course mates, course 9 NDA, with two of the admirals to be tried.

According to the source, their decision was based on moral grounds as their might be miscarriage of justice if they sit in the court.

Hedima is to be replaced by Chief of Naval Plans Rear Admiral Anthony Oni while Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji Air Vice Marshall Sam Odesola will replace Garba.

Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Samuel Afolayan on Monday signed the instrument of authority convening the court, which has Chief of Defence Intelligence Rear Admiral Joseph Ajayi as the President.

Other members include Chief of Policy and Plans (Army) Major General Patrick Akpa; Commandant, National War College, Rear Admiral Amos Adedeji.

The court is to be formally inaugurated next Monday in Lagos when the trial is expected to commence.

Two prosecutors have also been appointed, one Navy commodore and one Army colonel, both of whom are lawyers.

The BOI, headed by Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Training Command Rear Admiral Okee, had, in its report, indicted the three admirals and some junior officers for negligence, which led to the disappearance of the vessel.
