UAD seeks more support for strike

By Dele Moses

Special Correspondent, Ilorin

Workers and the entire people of Kwara State have been enjoined to intensify their support for the nation-wide strike which first phase just ended until the prices of petroleum products are reversed.

Civil society groups said in Ilorin that the Federal Government is insensitive to the plight of the masses.

In a statement signed by the state coordinator of the United Action For Democracy (UAD), Mr. Taiwo Otitolaye, and Chairman, Committee for Defence of Human Right (CDHR), Tunde Adeniyi, the groups urged the people to mobilise themselves to fight dictatorial tendencies of the government.

The statement reads: “What Nigerians bargained for after a prolonged military dictatorship is not civilian dictatorship which the Obasanjo government represents.

“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance, therefore, we must mobilise and organise ourselves for the dismantling of all dictatorial hegemonies.”

The groups called on the government to heed the call for a sovereign national conference, contending that the convocation of the conference is the only way out of the incessant crisis in the country.

The groups praised workers and the entire people of the state for the impressive response they showed to the nation-wide strike called by Labour Civil Society Coalition (LASCO).

The first phase of the strike ended on Thursday. Public servants and workers in some other private commercial establishments significantly observed the strike.

The civil servants did show up for work as the gates of most ministries and parastatals were locked while commercial banks and other financial institutions did not open to customers.
