Group hails FG for raising palliative panel

By Fabian Ozor

Senior Correspondent, Lagos

The Federal Government has been praised for setting up the Senator Ibrahim Mantu led 34-member committee on palliatives to cushion the effect of the recent increase in the prices of petroleum products.

The Justice and Good Governance Congress (JGGC) said in a statement in Abuja jointly issued by the Secretary-General, Mallam R. K. Abdullahi and the Public Relations Officer, Chief Jude Chikwendu, that President Olusegn Obasanjo has shown that he is not insensitive to the plight of the masses.

The JGGC said the government’s move is in consonance with the group’s position when during a news conference on Saturday October 9 in Abuja, it called on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) not to embark on a strike against the increase in the price of petroleum products but to opt for dialogue.

The group had argued during the news conference that dialogue was a better option than a strike because similar measures embarked on in the past did not yield fruit.

JGGC noted that strike in the past were counter-productive. “The NLC should try to exhaust every means of negotiation and dialogue in order to have proper understanding of ourselves and to allow reasons prevail than the hardship that would be meted out to Nigerians as a result of any industrial action”.

JGGC called on traditional rulers and religious leaders to call on their subjects and members respectively to be law abiding and “disregard the strike order by the NLC”.
