Atiku tasks north on agriculture

By Chesa Chesa

State House Correspondent, Abuja

Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has asked northern states to emulate their counterparts in the south by developing and promoting a particular agricultural produce for which they have comparative advantage.

He said only southern states have responded positively to the Federal Government’s challenge that every state should develop an agricultural product for export.

Receiving in Abuja on Thursday a delegation of the northern chambers of commerce, industries, mines and agriculture, led by its chairman, Alhaji Muhammed Abubakar, the vice-president said, “When we threw the challenge to states in 1999, most of the states that have responded are in the south. Northern states should endeavour to develop at least one agricultural product for sale to the world”, said Atiku.

He praised the efforts of Yobe and Jigawa states that have devoted resources to the production of gum Arabic.

He reiterated government’s determination to diversify the nation’s economy from oil and gas to other sectors, particularly agriculture.

The leader of the delegation praised the vice-president for “his tireless efforts in facilitating policies and programmes that are supportive of the private sector”.

He said the chambers would fully support northern states to concentrate on particular crops or solid minerals where the states have comparative advantage so as to encourage massive investment in the region and economic development.
