Governor assures workers of fair deal

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, has assured
labour leaders of the commitment of his administration to fulfilling its
obligations to workers.
Addressing a joint forum of labour leaders and political
appointees on Wednesday, the governor said government was well disposed to the
needs of workers and their unions and would always ensure that their
entitlements were paid as at when due.
He, however, urged them to show a greater preference for
dialogue rather than confrontation in the pursuit of their interests and
welfare.
He restated government’s resolve to champion reform
processes in various sectors of the economy, adding that the government was
working in partnership with the British Department for International
Development in vital areas like budget reform, due process, access to justice,
waste management, environmental and health education.
The governor said the forum was arranged to praise them for
the their support and contributions to the achievements recorded by the
government in its efforts to improve the lot of the people.
He added that the forum "was the beginning of
enlightenment and dialogue" between the government on one hand and the
labour unions and political appointees on the other hand on the plans and
programmes of government to achieve the all round development of the state.
He said government has launched a multi-pronged development
scheme designed to ensure positive changes in all parts and sectors of the
state.
The governor said the major projects of government included
the permanent site of the state’s University of Science and Technology,
international conference centre, judicial headquarters and the state teaching
hospital.
He said the government has also embarked on aggressive road
construction and refurbishment project in parts of the state capital so as to
give it a facelift.
The state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC),
Mr. Mike Eneh, assured the Governor that labour believes in dialogue and in
assisting government to achieve its positive and progressive objectives.
