Governor assures workers of fair deal

By Chukwudi Achife

Bureau Chief, Enugu

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, has assured labour leaders of the commitment of his administration to fulfilling its obligations to workers.

Addressing a joint forum of labour leaders and political appointees on Wednesday, the governor said government was well disposed to the needs of workers and their unions and would always ensure that their entitlements were paid as at when due.

He, however, urged them to show a greater preference for dialogue rather than confrontation in the pursuit of their interests and welfare.

He restated government’s resolve to champion reform processes in various sectors of the economy, adding that the government was working in partnership with the British Department for International Development in vital areas like budget reform, due process, access to justice, waste management, environmental and health education.

The governor said the forum was arranged to praise them for the their support and contributions to the achievements recorded by the government in its efforts to improve the lot of the people.

He added that the forum "was the beginning of enlightenment and dialogue" between the government on one hand and the labour unions and political appointees on the other hand on the plans and programmes of government to achieve the all round development of the state.

He said government has launched a multi-pronged development scheme designed to ensure positive changes in all parts and sectors of the state.

The governor said the major projects of government included the permanent site of the state’s University of Science and Technology, international conference centre, judicial headquarters and the state teaching hospital.

He said the government has also embarked on aggressive road construction and refurbishment project in parts of the state capital so as to give it a facelift.

The state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Mike Eneh, assured the Governor that labour believes in dialogue and in assisting government to achieve its positive and progressive objectives.
