Udenwa urges military to endure pains of democracy

Governor Achike Udenwa of Imo State has appealed to the
armed forces to tolerate the mistakes of the political leadership, saying the
mistakes would be corrected in the course of time.
He explained that no mistake was too much to be corrected if
Nigerians are determined to continue with democracy, adding that the military
should also be patient so that the country could achieve its set goals.
Udenwa said when he received the General Officer Commanding,
GOC 82 Division of the Nigerian Army based in Enugu, Maj. Gen. Abdul Haziz
Gbadegesin Adewuyi, that the present hiccups in the nation is not enough excuse
for the military to disrupt democracy.
He said the cordial relationship existing between Imo
indigenes and the men and officers of the 34 Field Artillery, Obinze is an
indication that both could live together without acrimony.
He explained that his administration has continued to
promote relationships that promote peace.
The governor added that with the kind of leadership within
the military and the new discipline that is found within their rank and file,
peace would continue to reign and democracy would blossom to the good of both
the civilians and military.
He said as is the case with some African countries, it is a
little bit difficult for the military to hand over and maintain very good
relationship with those they handed over to, adding that for the continued
economical and social development, the military and civil society must continue
to collaborate.
The GOC reiterated the determination of the military top
brass to continue with the training and re-training of the armed forces to make
them a formidable force within and outside Nigeria.
Adewuyi said the relationship between the military and the
civil society in the state is cordial and assured that his men would not do
anything to disrupt it.
HE said it was because of the rapport that the military high
command agreed that this year’s Chief of Army Staff games be held in
Owerri and urged the governor to accept its hosting.
