President Atiku Abubakar has advised each of the 36 states in the country to
identify at least, one agricultural product which could be developed to earn
foreign exchange.
Restating federal governments
determination to promote non-oil sectors, he said that the nations economy
could not be sustained on oil and gas revenue alone due to emerging trends in
global economy.
The vice-president, who spoke yesterday
when the executive of Northern Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and
Agriculture (CONSCCIMA) visited him at the State House, Abuja explained that
there were abundant agricultural resources which the nation could tap to achieve
prosperity for its citizenry.
Recalling the notable achievements of
northern states to agriculture, he, however, expressed worries that states in
the south have almost overtaken them.
"When we threw the challenge to states on
assumption of office in 1999, most of the states that have responded positively
are in the South. Northern states should endeavour to develop, at least, one
agricultural product for sale to the world," he charged.
Atiku, who commended Yobe and Jigawa
states for devoting enormous resources to the cultivation of gum Arabic,
emphasized that agriculture was the key factor to national transformation.
Earlier, chairman of CONSCCIMA, Alhaji
Badaru Abubakar, had lauded the vice president for his efforts in facilitating
policies and progammes which could boost the private sector.
He called for more support to the sector
in a bid to enable private operators play leading roles in the development of
the northern region.
He pledged the readiness of northern state
governments to heed the advice by identifying crops and solid minerals where
they have comparative advantage.
Alhaji Abubakar also commended the vice
president for assisting the chamber to secure a permanent slot for its members
to participate in various courses at the prestigious Nigerian Institute for
Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
