  • Fuel price hike: UI students take to the streets

    WALE FOLARIN, Ibadan

STUDENTS of the University of Ibadan (UI students) yesterday renewed their protest against the hike in prices of petroleum products as they marched through major streets in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, calling for a reversal of the prices.

The students, who beat security agents at the entrance to their campus, resurfaced in the heart of the town, chanting solidarity songs and condemning the federal authorities.

They made bonfires at strategic locations and distributed leaflets, while calling on residents of the town, especially market women to stay at home.

Addressing residents of Oke-Padre, leader of the protesting students, Mr. O.J. Dennis, accused President Olusegun Obasanjo of waging war against the masses.

He called on the people to join the protest and save the country from bad leadership.

In a related development, former Governor of the state, Alhaji Lamidi Adesina, condemned the committee set up by government to look into how to cushion the effect of the hike in prices of petroleum products.

Alhaji Adesina, who spoke with newsmen yesterday in Ibadan said the Federal Government was degrading human dignity through its economic policies.

"I do not believe that a God-given gift should be used to impoverish the people. Any handling of the God-given gift which will turn it into misfortune for Nigerians if not properly handled, people who are agitating are not morons, they were agitating because they are suffering in the midst of plentry. If government must increase fuel price there must be certain things on ground," he said.
