PDP slams Lagos on new councils

    FELIX NWANERI

LAGOS State government has received sharp criticisms from the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over its insistence not to revert to the recognised 20 local governments structure, formerly in operation in the state.

According to a press statement issued by the Lagos PDP and signed by its spokesman, Muyiwa Collins, the state governments position over the issue poses great hinderance to the development of the state.

Noting that the Alliance for Democracy (AD)s adamant posture has continue to bring untold hardship to indigenes of the state, the PDP statement alleged that the state government has already lent the 57 newly created councils 40 per cent of their seized allocations with 40 per cent interest rate.

The party claimed that the present situation favours the state government as it stands to reap from the purse of the councils whenever their allocations are released.

It also alleged that the state government plans to divert the councils funds after release to the remaining unrecognised 37 councils so that there would be no traces of how the funds were spent.

Meanwhile, the Lagos PDP has appealed to Lagosians to remain calm as the council funds are being kept in safe custody and will be released as soon as the state government reverts to the old council structure as provided in the 1999 constitution.
