PORT HARCOURT — INDICATIONS have emerged that Governor Peter Odili of Rivers State has allegedly offered to buy 3,000 AK-47 rifles from Alhaji Dokubo Asari, leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) at a cost of N250,000 each. Dokubo had allegedly told Governor Odili during a meeting that he had about 3,000 rifles and was willing to hand them over to government.
A source told Vanguard that Alhaji Dokubo Asari met with the Governor at the Government House in Port Harcourt early in the week. Prominent Rivers sons, former Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Karibi-Whyte and Dr. M.T Akobo are said to have facilitated the meeting. Vanguard gathered that the meeting was cordial in line with the on-going reconciliatory moves sweeping across the state.
The governor is said to have entreated with Dokubo Asari to hand over his weapons and receive financial compensation for them. Odili is said to have expressed willingness to buy each AK-47 assault rifle from Asari at the cost of (N250, 000) two hundred and fifty thousand naira. Dokubo Asari allegedlly admitted that he had 3, 000 rifles in his possesion and was keen on handing them over to government. He is also said to have appealed to the governor to actualize his promise to rehabilitate members of his militia and cult boys who would need rehabilitation after disarmament.
The NDPVF leader subsequently visited Okrika, the hometown of his former arch-rival, Mr Ateke Tom where he, Asari, reconciled Ateke Tom with the Busy Boys. When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Peter Odili, Mr Emma Okah admitted that reconiliatory moves were going on in the state at different levels in line with the move started by President Obasanjo but said he was not aware of the meeting between Governor Peter Odili and Asari Dokubo.
