Group laments lack of equipment to check HIV/AIDS scourge in C-River

By George Onah
Friday, October 15, 2004

CALABAR — A coalition of seven NGOs in Cross River State has raised an alarm over the non-availability of HIV/AIDs  control equipment to check the rising cases of the scourge in the state. Cross River State is currently rated as possessing the  highest cases of HIV/AIDs in the country. Notwithstanding this status, the state does not have antiretroviral therapy (ART)  centre.

Troubled by the development at a press briefing in Calabar, yesterday, the group which is called “Breakthrough Initiative Group  One”, said it was regrettable that governments’ efforts at checking the disease was unimpressive so far.

Spokesman and coach of the group, Miss Esse Nsed, stated that another important aspect of the epidemic is mother-to-child  transmission, saying that over 80% of pregnant women are subject to HIV test during antenatal clinic and when tested positive,  they don’t have available and access to effective treatment, especially antiretroviral therapy. She explained that such treatment  can reduce mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, labour and delivery.

"Furthermore, another major aspect is the prevention and reduction of vulnerability. Voluntary confidential counseling and testing  (VCT) is the major entry points to care, support and prevention About 14,400 people will be infected in the world by the end of  the day. In one hour as we talk, 600 new infections are recorded. Every six seconds, someone becomes HIV positive. Women  make 58% of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria.

"In the 15–24 age group, the ratio of male to female is twice as high among females as among males. There is a rising trend of  HIV transmission from mother-to-child transmission in the country", she said.
