Presidential System Has Failed Nigeria - Adesina
From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan
Former Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lam Adesina, yesterday took a look at the presidential system of government being practised in Nigeria and declared that the system has failed.
Adesina, who was answering questions at a programme organised by the state correspondent's chapel, said presidential system "instead of benefiting Nigerians has brought poverty and deprivations to the people."
Instead, the former governor advised that Nigeria should better substitute the presidential system of government for a parliamentary system which, he said, would give each regions equal chances to progress.
Said he: "It is a matter of fact that the presidential system of government has failed in Nigeria. It has brought a lot of sorrow to Nigerians. There is a lot of suspicion and discontent among the ethnic groups, we should immediately switch to the parliamentary if we must survive as a nation."
Adesina however suggested that government should allow a meeting of ethnic groups under whatever guise to discuss Nigeria as a nation and how we are going to relate to each other. "I don't think that advocates of National Conference are asking for too much. We should sit down and decide which form of government Nigeria needs so that would live together in peace and make progress," he added.
According to the former governor, apart from the fact that the presidential system is too costly and wasteful, "it has brought ethnic conflicts, mistrust and lopsidedness in development, we should fashion our own system which will be beneficial."
Adesina, who cited the restiveness in the Niger Delta, the emergency of Movement for Actualisation of Soverign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) and other ethnic militias as one of the flaws of the presidential system in Nigeria.
