...Chief Blasts Critics From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City Chairman of Edo State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Benson B. Osifo, has said that the NLC has "no apology to offer anybody, whether clergymen or traditional rulers, anyone who has been criticising the NLC for organising the strike protesting the fuel price increases." Osifo, who spoke with newsmen after a meeting of the executive committee of the state NLC to review the four-day warning strike, expressed delight that the strike was "definitely successful in the state, and indeed, nationwide." While affirming that workers "are expected back at work tomorrow (today" because the first phase of the strike ended yesterday, the labour chief stressed that the NLC remained the consistent voice of the masses. Said he: "We at the NLC are convinced that our action is justified, we are the voice of the people of this country, and we believe its our constitutional duty to react on behalf of Nigerians on any government policies, whether they are in the interest of the people or not. "We are not bothered, and we have no apology to offer anybody, whether government, clergyman or traditional ruler who condemned the NLC. It is not in our character to keep mute in the face of injustice or whenever we see anything wrong and not talk." Meanwhile, long queues of vehicles began to spring up at some filling stations yesterday in Benin City. The few stations which had earlier sold fuel to customers when the strike commenced on Monday had shut down by Wednesday morning, claiming to have exhausted their stock.
