Bayelsa Residents Count Losses
From John Iwori in Yenagoa

The anti-fuel price hike strike which ended yesterday literally paralysed the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa as business premises and government offices remained closed.

A cross section of residents in Yenagoa interviewed by THISDAY said since the strike started on Monday they have been finding it very difficult to make ends meet.

Mr. Ebitimi Okpos who lives in Amarata, a suburb of the state capital, told THISDAY that he has no money to discharge his obligations since the strike started.

"My brother, you know Bayelsa is a civil service state. No company, no industry. My only hope is on those in government. But since the strike started, I have not got a dime because banks were not opened. Even though there are commercial buses and motorcyclists plying the roads, I can't afford for the fares. That is why I have resorted to trekking to my destination and staying indoor most of the time," he said.

He called on the Federal Government to consider the plight of the ordinary man in its policy formulation and implementation because as he put it: "we are really suffering. Once you increase prices of petroleum products, every other thing is also affected."

Meanwhile, the chairman of NLC in the state Comrade Ben Bio Basuo has commended the people for responding to the sit-at-home order.

Describing the strike as "very successful so far", the labour leader in a telephone chat with THISDAY commended residents for maintaining the peace despite the provocation from some quarters.

According to him, the NLC would not relent in its efforts to ensure that the Federal Government reverts to the old prices of petroleum products.

He explained that the struggle to liberate the citizenry from what he called the "oppressive and obnoxious policies and programmes" of the Federal Government.
