Macebuh's Recall: INEC Commences Signature Verification From Chuks Okocha in Abuja Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said it will between October 14 and 16, verify signatures of the people of Ukwa East and West Federal constituency of Abia State, wishing to recall their representative at the House of Representatives, Honourable Chinyerem Macebuh. A statement by INEC Director of Public Affairs, Steve Osemeke, noted that the verification exercise will take place between 9 a.m and 5 p.m daily on the two days. Osemeke told THISDAY that the verification exercise will be preceded by a referendum, as spelt out in the constitution. Some petitioners who claimed to represent more than half of the registered voters in the Ukwa East and West Federal constituency of Abia State in August, notified INEC of their decision to recall Macebuh. The reason for the recall, according to the petitioners, was based on lack of confidence in the ability of Macebuh to provide proper leadership for the people. INEC in the statement noted that the verification exercise was in compliance with its constitutional responsibility. It quoted Section 69 of the Constitution which stipulates that " a member of the Senate or the House of Representatives may be recalled if; there is presented to the Chairman of INEC, a petition on that behalf signed by more than one half of the person registered to vote in that member's constituency, alleging their loss of confidence in that member and the petition is therefore, in a referendum conducted by INEC within 90 days of the date of receipt of the petition, approved by a simple majority of votes of persons registered to vote in that member's constituency."
