Conman Dupes PhD Seeking Lawmakers Kano From Yakubu Musa in Kano In a desperate bid to make up for their poor academic CVs, some principal officers and members of the Kano State House of Assembly have fallen victims of a conman, Mr Philip Onunkwo, who specialises in collecting money from unsuspecting persons for the award of fake honorary doctorate degrees. The Chief Whip of the Assembly Alhaji Bala Kosawa, who THISDAY gathered was a secondary school certificate holder, had already collected his own honorary PhD and commenced celebration, while other members were eagerly waiting for their turn before the bubble eventually burst yesterday. Kano State Director of the State Security Service (SSS), Alhaji Saddik Dalhatu, who paraded Onunkwo before newsmen at his office, noted that the conman had been duping unsuspecting people in different states across the country. According to him, Onunkwu, before his arrest has been collecting N10,000 from individuals, with a view to awarding them PhD or fellowship of the Institute of Human and Natural Resources, which he headed its northern liaison office. Investigations revealed that the institution is not accredited by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC), adding that many of Onunkwos victims are from Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. He said men of the service intercepted the conman, when he introduced his institution to a local government chairman in the state, who felt the matter needed the clarification of the service, as he is satisfied with his level of education. But, on the day he was arrested, some members of the Assembly, who were officially nominated for the award of the degrees had already converged at Sani Abacha Stadium, for their moment of honour.
