Monarch Seeks Constitutional Recognition Bauchi From Daniel Ior in Makurdi The paramount ruler of the Tiv kingdom Dr. Akawe Torkula has called for constitutional recognition of the traditional institution if the nation's democracy is to succeed and provide the needed peaceful environment for enhanced development. Specifically, the Tor Tiv has suggested the granting of constitutional powers to the traditional institution in the country with neccessary legal instruments for enhanced dispensation of justice. The monarch particularly mentioned land disputes, boundary and chieftancy matters, which he said are traditional in nature and content as those areas whre the traditional institution should be given legal authority to entertain. At the moment he noted that the absence of such constitutional powers were constituting a serious impediment in the dispensatiion of justice on such matters by the traditional rulers. The Tor Tiv made this position known in a paper titled "the role of the traditional rulers in dispensing justice" presented at a summit organised by Access to Justice programme in Makurdi. He regretted that politicians regard the traditional institution as antithesis to modernm democracy, the same democrats quite often fall back on the traditional imnstitution for answers to issues beyond the wisdom and capacity of the democratic leadership. He argued for instance that most crises in the country were brought under control only when the traditional institution played significant roles.
